The Great Reset

by Gretchen Kelly

Travel Destinations Designed to Restore Mind, Body, and Balance

If your computer has ever started acting a little...unhinged, you may know the magic of hitting a “restore point.” It’s the digital equivalent of a do-over; rewinding your system back to a moment before things went haywire. One click, and suddenly the glitches are gone, the clutter disappears, and your computer is back to its best self.

Now imagine doing the same for your body. Today’s resorts and spas are blending science with ancient wellness traditions to create real- life restore points—places where you can reset, recharge, and return to your optimal self.

Restoration at Altitude

Total resets at high altitudes are the forte of the luxury Himalayan journeys curated by Shakti Himalaya. New lodges available to stay and reset in include Prana Lodge, a solar powered sanctuary set at 7,000 feet and reached by foot or horseback. The Lodge was built for total immersion, with just seven suites, crafted by local artisans, using a blend of reclaimed and locally sourced stone, timber, and glass, while interiors feature rustic stone and timber complemented by brass lighting, handwoven textiles, sheep and yak wool carpets, and organic cotton bedspreads and cushions.

Also new is Panchachuli Lodge, a three-bedroom retreat, once a local village dwelling. The Lodge offers sunrise yoga, cooking masterclasses, and temple pilgrimages.

In these pristine environments, altitude becomes a healing modality in itself. Long, meditative walks through village paths and terraced fields slow the pace of both body and mind, while daily practices— guided yoga, mindful breath work, and intentional periods of quiet—create natural rhythms that mirror the contours of the landscape.

Meals are crafted from regional ingredients chosen for their digestive support, grounding guests through nourishment as much as through movement.

Shakti Himalaya Founder Jamshyd Sethna says, “Total restoration here is shaped by altitude, terrain and daily rhythm...each journey encourages clarity, resilience, and a renewed sense of balance.”

Ancient Herbal Remedies Work Alongside Modern Therapies

While Shakti Himalaya offers reset experiences at high altitudes, Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp looks closer to hand—at common herbs growing in its garden—to help its guests achieve a total reset.

Once a working monastery centered around its own botanic garden of wellness, Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp (also a member of Leading Hotels of the World) offers a reset based on centuries of herbal knowledge through its Botanic Health Spa—now complemented by contemporary diagnostics and nonsurgical longevity treatments.

The programming reads like a modern blueprint for sustainable vitality: acupuncture, osteopathy, regenerative therapies, and precision-based analysis designed to optimize lasting health. This is wellness as a complete ecosystem, where ancient herbal remedies culled from its own time-honored garden coexist with the latest in medical expertise.

Traditional Chinese Medicine is also part of the Sanctuary’s restore point philosophy. Its TCM practitioner Xavier Le Clef says that, “the emphasis is on measurable health outcomes informed by history and supported by contemporary medical expertise.” Here, he says, “monastic herbal knowledge works alongside advanced diagnostics and nonsurgical longevity therapies to improve recovery, function, and long-term vitality.”

Science Meets Restorative Wellness Rituals

The philosophy of “total reset” at Lake Como Edition’s Longevity Spa is a fusion of natural tranquility with a science-first approach to renewal. Inspired by the world’s Blue Zones—regions known for long, healthy lifespans—the spa blends high- performance technology with restorative ritual.

Treatments include Dry Float therapy, Near- Infrared (NIR) technology, hydrogen-oxygen infusions, and comprehensive Longevity CheckUps that analyze inflammation, nutrition, hormone balance, physical performance, and more. Japanese- inspired treatments like the Iki-Sabi Ritual incorporate fermented rice water, silk therapies, and mineral-rich wraps, while the Thermal & Hydrotherapy Circuit layers Finnish, herbal, and infrared saunas with steam and Turkish baths.

State-of-the-art fitness facilities and seasonal movement programs—sunrise yoga, guided hikes— ground the experience in both nature and science.

As General Manager Anton Moore puts it, “We create a space where total renewal is inevitable.”

Desert Reset in the Stillness of the Southwest

While Lake Como’s Longevity Spa anchors itself in Blue Zones, The Spa at Camelback Inn’s recent $24 million transformation focused on the resort’s new AriVéa philosophy of aligning desert energy to each guest’s needs. The new 32,000-square-foot space features 20 treatment rooms, a solarium, an immersive wellness circuit, and hydrotherapy in the form of flow, still, and chill pools. Resetting here entails four intentional pathways: Detox, Soothe, Harmonize, and Restore.

Detox treatments use adobe clay, juniper-sage oil, and triple exfoliation to clear stagnation and ground the body.

Soothe offers deep recovery through rose-infused facials, CBD-enhanced massage, and rich lipid body therapies.

Harmonize is built around energetic alignment— HydraFacials, balancing massages, and Ayurvedic techniques that help restore flow.

Restore emphasizes radiance through cellular renewal facials, muscle recovery work, and brightening body rituals.

Together, the pathways offer a map for guests to recalibrate from the inside out.

Spa Director Shelley Narath explains, “Wellbeing is deeply personal and intentionally designed to restore guests from the inside out. A true total reset.”

At the We Care Spa in Desert Hot Springs, California, the entire guest experience is geared to a curated retreat.

We Care Spa centers its program on gut health, with the understanding that the gut is the body’s “second brain” in charge of running it at optimum levels. A structured liquid fast of fresh juices, teas, and soups gives the digestive system a gentle, restorative break. Colonics, yoga, nutrition classes, spa treatments, and time in desert stillness support deep wellness and integration. Managing Director Jim Root says that the program has proven effective in hitting the “restore point” for guests for more than 40 years.

Wellness, Water, and Intentional Rest

At The American Club in Kohler, Wisconsin, rest is both a philosophy and a practice. The Yoga, Rest & Release Retreat provides three days of intentional slowing—an immersion in Kriya yoga, mindful breath work, philosophical workshops, sunrise meditations, and the healing properties of water.

Guests also experience the Kohler Waters Spa, where hydrotherapy rituals and signature treatments encourage a release of mental and physical tension. It’s a retreat built around presence, community, and the therapeutic power of elemental heat and cold.

Kohler’s Spa Director Nikki Miller reflects, “A day at Kohler Waters Spa feels like a genuine reset... water, warmth, and thoughtful care help you reconnect with yourself.”

Seclusion as Natural Wellness Medicine

Like Kohler Waters Spa, La Casa de la Playa on the Riviera Maya in Mexico uses water to stir wellness. The property offers a quiet, adults-only environment of 63 beachside guest suites where the reset begins in stillness. Muluk Spa—a Forbes Travel Guide Five Star- rated sanctuary—provides hydrotherapy circuits and ancestral bodywork inspired by Mayan tradition.

Here, the concept of a reset extends beyond treatments into lifestyle. Butler service, private yacht excursions, sunrise swims, candlelit beach dinners, and sound-led relaxation create space for mental and emotional unwinding.

As the General Manager Alfredo Magaña notes, “A total reset here isn’t about doing more; it’s about creating the space to slow down, listen inward, and restore naturally.”

A New Age of Restoration

Across these destinations—mountain, jungle, city, desert, lake—the message is consistent: A total reset is not a single practice or treatment. It is a process of returning to presence, clarity, nourishment, and inner quiet. It is based in both ancient tradition and modern science. It entails food, movement, therapy, bodywork, and sometimes one of the deepest components: the spirit of place.

Sun, sand, water, wind, even the earth itself can help you rewind to a healthier, more vibrant restore point. Choosing the sanctuary that speaks to your needs means listening intently to where you are out of balance and finding the place and practices that are most closely in alignment.
