Celebrate National Great Outdoors Month

by Lisa Loverro

Established in 1998, June is National Great Outdoors Month highlighting the physical, mental, and emotional benefits of spending time outdoors. It’s an annual celebration that encourages everyone to step outside and reconnect with nature.

Whether your ideal adventure is hiking a scenic mountain trail, paddling a quiet lake, cycling through a state park, camping beneath the stars, or simply enjoying a neighborhood green space, the great outdoors offers countless opportunities to recharge. Research continues to show that time spent in nature can reduce stress, improve mood, boost physical fitness, and enhance overall well-being.

Looking for inspiration to get outside? Visit a state or national park, take an outdoor photography class or learn to identify local birds. If you're seeking a bigger adventure, consider kayaking, canoeing, deep-sea diving, or even planning a trip to witness the Northern Lights. You can also give back by volunteering as a summer camp counselor or introducing children to the wonders of nature through a guided hike or bike ride.

Here are some great spots in the States to get outside this summer:

One of my most favorites spots to explore the outdoors in the U.S. is the state of Utah. Blending into the untouched red-rock country of the Colorado Plateau in this state,  Amangiri and its satellite Camp Sarika embody two expressions of the desert landscape. Set across more than 900 acres, the resort’s minimalist architecture disappears into canyon and mesa forms. Amangiri’s 34 modernist suites, Aman Spa, and mesa-facing pool evoke deep stillness, while Camp Sarika’s ten tented pavilions channel a more exploratory spirit. Together, they form the perfect base for immersion in the American Southwest, where guided adventures, open horizons, and elemental design encourage connection to place. In California, discover the waterfalls and forested trails of Yosemite National Park before retreating to Rush Creek Lodge & Spa at Yosemite for forest bathing experiences, guided hikes, and restorative spa therapies. In the Pacific Northwest, explore the glacier-carved peaks of Olympic National Park, then relax nearby at one of the many coastal wellness retreats, such as the Domaine Madeleine, that emphasize ocean air, movement, and mindfulness.

So, this June, answer nature's call. Discover a new trail, explore an unfamiliar park, or simply spend more time outside. National Great Outdoors Month is the perfect reminder that some of life's greatest wellness experiences begin just beyond your front door.
