Oh, Mexico!

El Careyes Mexico

A sun-soaked oceanfront property, El Careyes, Mexico, gets a fresh new design and offers a slew of new wellness programs. El Careyes Mexico. El Careyes Mexico.

Set on what feels like your own private enclave, on the Jalisco coast of Mexico, El Careyes Club & Residences was originally conceived by Italian entrepreneur Gian Franco Brignone, who first visited the area in 1968. Nearly 51 years later, the oceanfront oasis (dubbed “Eden of The Pacific”), situated along 5,000 acres of jungle, mangroves, cliffs and beaches, has a brand new look replete with modern interiors, including polished concrete fl oors and natural wood accents by Mauricio Rocha and Gabriela Carrillo of the Mexico City–based firm Taller de Arquitectura.

Along with existing villas and casitas, the property features 24 new residences; a new outdoor restaurant, La Duna Restaurant & Sunset Lounge Bar; five outdoor pools; two tennis courts; yoga pavilion; a copa (giant concrete basin perched at the edge of a cliff ) for meditation and sound-bathing; horseback riding; kayaking; and a spa anticipated to open in 2020.

Seven years ago, the El Careyes Foundation was established to create programs for 10 surrounding villages including sports and recreation, English language training, and contemporary art and community offerings. Guests can take a field trip to a local classroom, or head to the beach to watch baby sea turtles make their way to the ocean (1.3 million newborn turtles from four different species have been released) as part of a longstanding Sea Turtle Protection and Conservation Program. But, at Careyes, there’s no adhering to a set daily itinerary. That is, unless you want one.
