Every year around this time, Organic Spa Magazine focuses the spotlight on fitness. But this year we are opening it up a bit, to invite wellness in, too. After all, when we talk about being fit, what we are really talking about is staying well. And, these days, we are thrilled to see wellness initiatives everywhere we go: at hotels, gyms, restaurants, the doctor’s office, the food market and, of course, the spa.

In the spirit of a healthy new year, we reached out to Tieraona Low Dog, M.D., and other experts, to share wellness resolutions with us. In her new book, Life is Your Best Medicine: A Woman’s Guide to Health, Healing and Wholeness at Every Age, Dr. Low Dog, Director of the Fellowship at Andrew Weil’s Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona, cites research showing that if Americans embraced a healthier lifestyle, 91 percent of diabetes, 81 percent of heart attacks, 50 percent of strokes and 36 percent of all cancers could be prevented. Read our story, “Wellness Wisdom,” page 42, for some great advice.

Our writer Rose Spinelli spoke with renowned yogi Seane Corn about taking her yoga practice off the mat to set an example of holistic living, “Yoga Can Change the World,” page 36. OSM “Beauty is Wellness” blog columnist Jolene Hart sat down with New York Times best-selling author and wellness guru Kris Carr to talk about eating—and juicing—for optimum health (“Hale and Healthy,” page 19).

Speaking of juicing, you won’t want to miss Nicole Dorsey’s story on “Demystifying Detox,” page 38. Detoxing the body—and the skin—by juicing, cleansing, enzymes, probiotics, and exercise, is hugely popular, and for good reason. (By the way, did you know that personal-care behemoth, Johnson & Johnson pledged to detox its products by removing potentially harmful and carcinogenic chemicals from lotions and toiletries by 2015?). Another piece of good news, which you may have heard if you follow our blog: Oprah is in the early stages of launching an organic food and beauty company. Just think of the impact Organic Oprah could make toward diminishing the obesity and diabetes epidemics in this country!

If there was talk around your holiday table about an eco-family reunion, we’ve got suggestions for great green getaways that will please every generation in “Top Eco Family Reunions,” page 65. And with an eye on family, we were privileged to spend time with actress Christine Taylor to chat about how she, husband Ben Stiller and their kids balance a green lifestyle with successful Hollywood careers. (“Living Green with Christine Taylor,” page 24.

Happy, healthy New Year from all of us at Organic Spa Magazine!
