Irish Castle Hop: Dromoland Castle

by Sandra Ramani

Everything about Dromoland Castle, on the west coast of Ireland, roots you firmly in the destination, from the hotel’s setting—a historic castle, dating back to the 16th-century—and the locally sourced ingredients used in its kitchens, to the era-appropriate activities like falconry, archery and horse-drawn carriage rides that can be enjoyed on the estate’s rolling green grounds.

So it’s only natural that the newly revamped spa should celebrate the area, too. “We’re seeing a growing number of guests wanting a spa experience that encapsulates the surrounding location, and showcases locally and ethically sourced ingredients,” says Spa Manager Kerry Kelly.

As part of the rollout of the new spa (which included renovations of the six treatment rooms and relaxation lounge), the menu now features Gaelic Body Therapy services designed to improve circulation, invigorate the skin and revive sore muscles. Ranging from detoxifying back-masks and seaweed-and-sea-salt scrubs to hot basalt stone massages, the treatments all use products from Wild Irish Seaweed, made with Atlantic Ocean seaweed that’s been sustainably hand-harvested off the coast of County Clare, by four generations of the Talty family.

Afterwards, you’ll feel revived enough for a joust—or, at least, a couple of Irish botanical gin cocktails in the hotel’s always-lively bar.
