MOHONK MOUNTAIN HOUSE

NEW YORK

Founded by the Smiley Family in 1869, our Victorian castle resort is nestled in the Hudson Valley, only 90 miles north of New York City. Surrounded by 40,000 acres of pristine forest, our National Historic Landmark resort offers farm-to-table cuisine and an award-winning spa.

The minute you ascend the two-plus miles and arrive at the stunning Mohonk Mountain House, you’ll feel immediately ready to retreat, retool and reinvigorate. That’s because this National Historic Landmark in New Paltz, New York, just 90 miles north of New York City, offers a total immersion in nature.

The spa is one of the many centerpieces of a Mohonk getaway. Renovated this fall, the spa features the Swissline by Dermalab skin-care line and offer guests rejuvenating treatment options in all of the 16 treatment rooms, sweeping views of the Catskills in the distance and an outdoor mineral bath that will immediately rejuvenate you after a long drive up the mountaintop.

The spa menu has been thoughtfully calibrated to feature seasonal body wraps and massages. A favorite in winter is the Contrast Hydrotherapy Massage that recreates the natural healing and anti-inflammatory effects of glacial lakes by including a steam and cold shower immersion followed by a personalized massage featuring therapeutic plant extracts infused with CBD.

All of this is just right for exhausted adults. However, Mohonk is, at its core, as much a resort for the entire family.

Mohonk is the perfect wintry escape that immediately connotes the feeling of stepping into a fairy tale. Set amongst 40,000 acres of forests, the entire family will love coming here during this season especially. The activities can be as non-stop or as mellow as you’d like.

After all, the outdoor options are vast. They include putting spikes on your shoes (the ski house will provide them) and going for a hike (there are 85 miles of hiking trails to explore and a QR code with mindfulness exercises to do along the way, including a one-mile hike around the 16.5-acre lake and a one-mile hike to Mohonk Spring, once used as the source of the resort’s drinking water), snowtubing, ice skating and cross-country skiing.

If the weather happens to be inclement, the indoor options are just as abundant, including a game room, kids’ club, taking a break for daily afternoon tea and cookies or swimming in the indoor (heated) pool.

There’s so much history at this family-owned resort, which dates back to 1869, and the vintage memorabilia and sepia-toned photos lining the walls remind guests of how many have enjoyed the serenity of the space.

No matter how long you’re on property, there are new things to discover. A gift shop and soda fountain means endless ice cream sundae (and intriguing shopping) possibilities, too. Evening movies are decidedly family-friendly (one recent screening—Home Alone!).

Bundling up and spending the afternoon by the campfire roasting marshmallows will delight your entire family (and you, too). Best of all, the guest rooms are spacious with plenty of extra room for the entire family (and there are no TVs which leads to lots more old-fashioned fun) and all meals are included in your room rate.

Ultimately, whether you’re at Mohonk for a day or week, you’ll feel a sense of peace and calm the minute you step outside on one of the many verandas and marvel at the snowy woods and hanging icicles. This is truly a winter wonderland and promises more serenity than you can even imagine.
