Under One Roof

Like my granddaddy always used to say, “putting a bum roof on a beautiful house is like using dirt-flavored frosting on an Italian wedding cake.”

Okay, he never used to say that but you get my point. The rebuild of the Rocky River Green Home is comparable to a luxurious wedding cake; dropping a run-of-the-mill roof on top of the exquisite workmanship would compromise the entire project.

That’s why Ohio-based Warren Roofing (warrenroofing.com) was brought in to help design the Rocky River Green Home’s roof. Established in Cleveland in 1938, Warren Roofing has not only been atop the roofing game for over 70 years, but Warren Roofing has been ahead of the competition in both craftsmanship and innovation.

Warren Roofing’s designs called for eloquent style that was durable and green, which is why they chose Owens Corning (roofing.owenscorning.com) shingles, some of the highest rated shingles on the market today. Owens Corning Roofing Systems combine durability with eco-consciousness, providing homeowners with an energy efficient roof that can last longer thus creating less waste-to-landfill. Through the Preferred Contractor Shingle Recycling Program, Owens Corning recycles all removed shingles that are then repurposed into pavement. This step can help green-minded homeowners fulfill certification requirements for LEED and NAHB National Green Building Standard.

Warren Roofing decided on a shingle style that utilizes “granule technology that reflects the sun’s rays to keep the roof cooler. The technology will help keep the Green House cooler, naturally, while lowering the electric bill by laying-off the air conditioning. Using the AC unit less means the RRGH’s footprint gets even smaller.

A unique part of the Rocky River Green Home’s design is the second-level patio off of the Master Bath. Overlooking the beautiful backyard, the patio offers a perfect spot for sunning, relaxing with a book or simply a different vantage point on nature. Instead of using the typical black asphalt covering, Warren Roofing incorporated a white EPDM Roofing System, which deflects the summer-long beating from the sun rather than absorbing it, keeping the patio cool all summer long. Being a high solar reflectant, the white EPDM Roofing System has received a big “thumbs up” from the Cool Roof Council program.

Breaking the AC addiction is not always an easy thing to do throughout a sweltering Rocky River summer, which is why Warren Roofing installed two attic fans that run completely on solar power. With perimeter recycled perforated soffit material lining the radius of the home, air is able to enter through the soffit’s perforations, forced up through the roof’s rafter system and out the attic fans creating a natural jet stream of airflow though the attic. This cycle cools the attic along with the rest of the home, leaving the ac unit in the past.

Creating a roofing system that is as durable and green as it is stylish and beautiful is a testament to the design work of Warren Roofing and the eco-conscious methods and materials of Owens Corning. With all of the hard work and dedication that has gone into the Rocky River Green Home’s exterior so far, installing the perfect roof was just the icing on the cake.
