Tropical Delights

The newly renovated Sanctuary Cap Cana draws from the bounty of a lush landscape

At the eastern edge of the Dominican Republic, less than 15 minutes from the Punta Cana Airport, Cap Cana is a 30,000-acre private beachfront enclave with a golf club, a marina and a selection of resorts. Chief among them is the adults-only, all-inclusive Sanctuary Cap Cana, which recently underwent a $45 million upgrade.

In addition to offering things you might not expect from a typical all-inclusive (a separate all-suite section with butler services and dozens of private pools), Sanctuary is home to an 11-room spa that reflects the traditions of the island. Come early to enjoy the outdoor hydrotherapy circuit—featuring hot and cold plunge pools, a hydromassage pool, sauna, foot bath and more, all set around lush gardens—then indulge in a treatment that relies on natural or organic ingredients. Standouts include the 80-minute Taino’s Sensation, which is inspired by the native Taino people and includes a full-body exfoliation with a hand-carved, symbol-adorned clay stone followed by a massage with a soothing serum.

The spa also offers an Alchemy Bar experience that starts with an essential oil inhalation ritual, then lets you loose to create your own natural products, such as body and face masks made with honey, yogurt or almonds you’ll mash up with a mortar and pestle.
