Tips for Holiday Wellness

by Karim Orange

Tis this season for to be jolly! But sometimes that kind of jolly can lead to a lot of unhealthy holiday habits that can wreak havoc on your looks. Here are a few simple tips that will help you look good and enjoy the festivities and prepare for holiday wellness.

With all the holiday festivities, sometime we forget about how important it is to get a good night’s sleep, exercise and maintain our regular beauty routines. Mix that with overeating and drinking and your years’ worth of wellness can dwindle quickly.

Pay special attention to hydrating your eyes and lips pre- and post-party

Your eyes are window to not only the soul but a key indicator to lack of sleep and hydration. Make sure you hydrate after a long night and before the big party. Try Under Eye Repair Serum by DeVita Skincare. It’s referred to as an under-eye 911. Also try the old-school cucumber remedy, and lie down with cucumber slices over your eyes. It really works! The cooling effect reduces swelling, and cucumbers contain a host of antioxidants.

Your lips come into contact with many drying agents, such as coffee and alcohol. Try sipping from a straw so they avoid direct contact with your lips. Do not use products that contain silicone or petroleum. Instead try lip products that your body recognizes as food. We love Surya Brasil Vegan Lip Balm and Elixir Plumping Lip Gloss by Vapour Organic Beauty. Also try putting a bit of organic honey on your lips in the evening. This helps to alleviate chapped skin.

How to Conquer “The Big Eat”

This is what I like to call a dinner that consist of foods you might only consume this time of year, like a traditional Christmas feast that consists of many courses, including several yummy desserts. Here are some tips to help balance overeating.

Lower your calories early in the day Try to wake up the morning of a big eat day and consume a medium-calorie breakfast that’s high in nutrients, but with medium calorie content. A good quality protein shake with added berries and bananas is a good choice.

A good choice is Garden of Life Organic Plant Protein made with organic yellow peas, pumpkin, cranberry and flax. This protein is vegan, raw and gluten free.

Eat an apple before the big meal Apples contain lots of fiber (which helps prevent in overeating), and pectin. Pectin regulates the digestive system and cholesterol levels.

Try not to engage in two “Big Eats” in a row If possible, try not to indulge in these types of meals two days in a row. Sometimes this means not taking home a doggie bag for the next day. If you do choose to bring food home, choose healthy items such as protein and vegetables.

Preventing a Hangover

Moderation is always the key when it comes to alcohol consumption. In case you find yourself enjoying a few too many libations, here are a few remedies:

Side of Water For every drink, throw back a side of water. Drinking water helps prevent dehydration. That pounding headache sometimes experienced the morning after drinking is caused the dehydration of tissues surrounding the brain that consist mostly of water.

Keep it light, top shelf, and be weary of mixing Light-colored cocktails, such as white wine and vodka, contain fewer congeners. Congeners are produced during fermentation, and linked to hangovers. Also be careful of mixing different kinds of alcohol. According to HowStuffWorks.com[1] : The carbonation in beer actually speeds up the absorption of alcohol. As a result, following beer with liquor gives the body even less time than usual to process.

Take a multivitamin before bed I like to take a multi before bed, and as well as vitamin B. Alcohol can rob the body of vitamin and minerals.

Get up and get moving On days when I’m tired from the evening before, I usually don’t feel like going to the gym. I hop on my rebounder by Needak for 15 minutes. This gets the blood flowing and my lymphatic system going (very detoxing). It also makes my skin glow.

Have a happy holiday!
