The Natural Products Expo West

by Nicole Dorsey Straff

The Natural Products Expo West, held  in Anaheim, California earlier this month, is the mother of all great green trade shows. This may have been the biggest one yet, with over  3000 exhibitors spread out on three floors, covering 393,000 square feet.

Depending on who you ask, there were anywhere from 60,000 to 80,000 attendees. It was amazing, organic craziness all at once. Several great products stood out, and we will continue our coverage of more of these on future posts.

Detox Tea and then some

As a regular detox practitioner, I often fast before yoga, sipping only tea until my noon class. But that’s too long without real substance, and by then I’m too hungry and tend to overeat later.  Between meals I’m occasionally too hungry to settle for a cup of green or chai tea along with my handful of nuts. What do you drink when you want more than tea but less than soup?

° Numi Tea showcased new products including their innovative new line of Savory Teas, a first-of-its-kind product made from organic vegetables, wild herbs, decaf tea and aromatic spices. New flavors, never before offered in tea, include Tomato Mint, Carrot Curry, Fennel Spice, Spinach Chive, Beet Cabbage and Broccoli Cilantro. Their new Fair Labor Practices (FLP) Program is a proprietary verification program that focuses on labor and workplace conditions in the developing regions where Numi’s agricultural ingredients are grown (India, Asia).

° I also found new studies on the efficacy of roasting dandelion root for insomnia.  Dandelion is also known for its detoxifying effects on the liver. Try Traditional Medicinals’ Organic Roasted Dandelion Tea.

°Gluten-free products and Chia were everywhere. My favorite dessert sampling at Natural Products Expo West was Chia Pods (mango and banana).

Fair Trade Beauty companies

° Here’s a great cause. The Woman2Woman™ project is a generosity movement funded by Rooted Beauty™ that provides partnering organizations with financial resources to deliver women from extreme poverty, abuse and sex trafficking. A portion of all handmade profits generated will be redistributed to a Rooted-Beauty project that will help one woman at a time.
