Introducing new furnishings into a home can bring a fading room back to life. Recently, my girlfriend and I purchased a new shelving unit, and it changed the dynamic of our entire apartment. Something as simple as a side table or a bean bag chair or even a slip cover for the couch can put a fresh spin on the settings that surround us. No one knows this quite like our friends at Arhaus ̶ an eclectic, Cleveland-based furniture retailer that utilizes the skill and design of the world’s craftsmen in an eco-responsible way.
Arhaus founder John Reed opened his first store in the Flats district of downtown Cleveland in 1986, and over the course of twenty-seven years, has expanded his eco decor-conscious brand to over forty stores nationwide. The designers for Arhaus gather inspiration from all points of the globe, from Italy to India, and create furnishings that span the timeline of man’s history with elegance and grace. With Reed and his staff of 600 being so in tune to the world’s need to create in a smart, sustainable way, Reed made a commitment. From day one, Reed strove to provide beautiful, timeless furniture without the use of materials from endangered rain forests. He has kept this commitment over the course of his career.
The Fischbacks have aligned themselves with Reed’s philosophy for years – long before the Rocky River Green Home project (RRGH) began.
The Hadley Collection adds comfort and class.
“We have always bought Arhaus slip cover couches in the past,” RRGH owner Beverly Maloney-Fischback said proudly. “We have re-used them many times, adding new slip covers every couple of years.”
The Fischbacks have come to trust Arhaus with their décor needs; Arhaus couches and sofas can be found throughout the RRGH. The chic Rooney Apartment Sofa occupies the master bedroom sitting area. The Rooney uses Sustainable Forestry Initiative certified wood and features a double row of hand-nailed pewter accent nailheads for a dash of panache.
The Hadley Cambridge Collection mixes contemporary style with a touch of luxury. Pebbled texture on lush, top-grain leather ensures a warm and cozy feel in the front room and den area. The Garner Sectional, a gorgeous twelve-piece work of art that includes a chaise, daybed and ottoman, is designed for “hours of lounging,” according to Arhaus.com. The seating material in all of the sofas is made with eco-friendly, soy-based foam to lower the amount of chemical gassing that can come from traditional sofa cushions.
Arhaus’ Kensington Dining Gateleg table is the perfect mix of rustic elegance and simplicity. The Kensington is made from 100% recycled pine wood salvaged and repurposed from old doors, boats and barns from rural farming regions in the far reaches of Asia. Wood that would have otherwise gone to waste has been bleached and waxed, providing fashionable design with a little country flare.
Like Arhaus, the Fischbacks hold an appreciation for all cultures and their individual styles and fashions. Almost as impressive as the Kensington table is the Tao Console table that lines a hallway of the RRGH. Created from Acacia wood (a renewable, tropical hardwood), the Tao is crafted by India’s woodworking artisans and features knots and joint lines that vary from piece to piece, making each one-of-a-kind. When cleaned and polished, the Tao shimmers in the hall of the RRGH as the afternoon sun dances across it.
From tables to sofas to chairs–even bean bag chairs (look for those in our Yoga Room edition, coming soon)–the artistry of Arhaus has been in the Fischback’s lives long before the RRGH ever was. So it was only fitting to make Reed and Arhaus a part of the project from the very beginning. With such a long and lovely relationship, Arhaus will always be a permanent guest at the Fischback’s.
