Green Your Bathroom Routine With Recycled Plastic

by Elke Erschfeld

PreserveEvery six months I get a postcard from my dentist to remind me that my next cleaning is due. Wouldn’t it be great to get a similar reminder to replace your old toothbrush? That’s why the Preserve Toothbrush Subscription is such a smart solution. It ensures that every two or three months you get a new toothbrush via mail. But that’s not at all. Originally Preserve developed its first toothbrush in an effort to recycle existing plastic made from oil and natural gas to preserve natural resources.

Preserve gives discarded products made from #5 polypropylene plastic, collected from personal households and companies like Stonyfield Farm, a second life. Waste products such as used yogurt cups or discarded toothbrushes are sorted, cleaned, tested, and then recycled into new Preserve products like toothbrushes or razors. Both are low-interest items on my shopping list. Many times I have found myself at a drugstore or supermarket realizing I needed a new toothbrush with no green alternative in sight. I’m glad a company figured out how to make it more convenient to live a greener life-style through a subscription program.

Once you receive a new toothbrush in the mail you can recycle the old one through Preserve’s Gimme 5 program. As the name suggests, the company will accept all #5 plastic for recycling through the mail and designated bins at retailers such as Whole Foods Market. In return you will be rewarded in partnership with Recyclebank through points that are redeemable for discounts or donations to a cause. Other household items made from recycled plastic include cooking accessories such as mixing bowls, cutting boards, food storage containers and tableware. What all products have in common is that they are made from 100% recycled materials. Preserve not only turns waste into useful every day items but they all look contemporary through clean lines and bright colors. With so many great design options you might want to consider greening your kitchen next.
