Energy Efficient Outdoor Gear From BioLite

by Myron Mariano

BioLite is the company behind CampStove, a smokeless backpacking stove cum charging station. For spring 2016, they are adding three new products that will delight the outdoorsman.

Light the Way

PowerLight Mini is a clippable lantern that, although is roughly the size of a credit card, delivers 135 lumens of on-the-go, edge-lit white light. Use it instead of a glare-prone head lamp when you're out camping, or mount it in the front of your bike during night time rides. It comes in four lighting modes: white lantern, red night vision, strobe, and point light.

Its USB rechargeable battery (of which you can use the next product below) provides up to 52 hours of light, or in a pinch, doubles as a 1,350 mAh power bank.

Blessings from the Sun

SolarPanel 5 and 5+ are BioLite's first offerings in the solar category. These five-watt, high-efficiency monocrystalline panels provide the necessary juice for you to run your smartphone, tablet, camera, and other small devices. The 5+ has the additional capability of storing a charge for continued power at night.

No need to guess where to face the panels in order to absorb the most amount of energy from the sun: both models come with an integrated sundial and a 360-degree kickstand for easy positioning on uneven terrain or a backpack.

Meals on the Go

CookStove is everything that is great about CampStove, in a streamlined design and a more accessible price tag. Like its predecessor, CookStove requires no gas canisters. Instead, you "charge" it by filling the chamber with wood, light it up, and turn on the blower. A full charge provides up to 30 hours of necessary flame to cook food or as a plain heat source.
