EASY STYLING

by Organic Spa Magazine

Some women are on a relentless pursuit of pendants, earrings, shoes or scarves, but I scan the shops for pretty clips for my hair. And believe me, they are not easy to find. I’ve even resorted to making my own, sewing satin or grosgrain ribbons onto combs, modeled after Chanel classics that I have loved, with a price tag that I have not.

I am always on the prowl for hair accessories that will help me pin up, pull back, or coax my curly locks into submission. After years of searching, I have collected a solid stash of old-fashioned combs, vintage hair pins, even hand-painted chop sticks (those, thankfully, have long since been retired to a drawer). I wear them, enjoy them, lose them, break them, and then I am on the hunt once again!

That is why I was so glad to stop by Yarok Beauty Kitchen, an organic and sustainable salon in downtown Manhattan, and discover that owner Mordechai Alvow, founder of Yarok Hair, an all-natural beauty line, had created The Fun Bun, a set of nine simple hair accessories made in the US from 25 percent recycled plastic. “I often listen to women say they are not sure how to put their hair up in a simple, quick way and they are not sure which tools to use,” says Alvow. Not any more.

The Fun Bun includes six small grip hair pins, two oversized combs and one chignon comb ($20; yarokhair.com). They are great staples for women like me who like to wear their hair in a twist, a bun, a chignon, or some variation of a pulled-back up-do, especially in the summer.

Here is the recipe for Yarok Beauty Kitchen’s Side Braided Bun.

1. Pull hair over to one side into a loose braid. Fasten with an elastic band at the end.
2. Pull the braid in the opposite direction and tuck it into itself. Secure with hairpins.
3. Finish with Yarok Feed Your Hold spray to keep your hairstyle in place.
4. Voila!
