Relax at this Clifftop Hideaway with Jaw-Dropping Ocean Views

by Jennie Nunn

A few hours north of San Francisco, a clifftop hideaway with jaw-dropping ocean views.

If you’ve ever wanted to jump inside the pages of an enchanted fairy tale, now might be your chance. The magical Inn at Newport Ranch, about three-and-a-half hours north of San Francisco, is situated on a 2,000-acre cattle ranch with more than 20 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking and ATV rides, along with redwood trees and outdoor hot tubs with panoramic ocean and cliff views.

Set along a jagged coastline that resembles California’s version of Ireland, the luxury inn—on land that was once a 19th-century logging town—was opened three years ago. A modern but cozy oceanfront property built by Vermont-based architects Dave Sellers and Jim Sanford, it is fashioned with feels-like-it-has-always-been-there handcrafted touches, from a headboard made from a single piece of burl, to a 20-foot-wide walk-in fireplace and table lamps constructed from trees.

Before heading out to a nearby wine tasting, a hike at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, or a ride on the historic 131-year-old Skunk Train, enjoy a complimentary breakfast with fresh juice, fruit and muffins. Grab a book or board game from the in-house library, walk out to the edge of the cliffs to watch for seals, or check into the forest-like spa for a Sound Massage with Tibetan singing bowls to promote circulation and relieve stress. Next year, the Inn will debut a traditional sweat lodge for healing and restorative retreats, another reason to return.
