Wellness Supreme

by Sandra Ramani

Spread out over 48 forested acres on a ridge overlooking Lake Lucerne, the Bürgenstock Resort has been delighting guests (including regulars like Audrey Hepburn and Sophia Loren) since it opened in 1873. Now, following a nine-year, $500 million renovation, the Swiss icon has been reinvented for a new generation of travelers—especially those seeking wellness. As part of the redevelopment, the four-hotel complex now features two world-class spas and a full medical center, making it one of Europe’s most extensive wellness hubs.

Guests looking for comprehensive workups and dedicated fitness, health and well-being retreats should book a stay at the 160-room Waldhotel, designed by Italian starchitect Matteo Thun, with nature-inspired interiors. At its core is an extensive clinical facility with a roster of medical staff (from internists to dentists, many of whom work in conjunction with an area hospital); spaces for physical therapy, fitness and treatments; a three-chamber cryotherapy room; and much more.

But for pure relaxation—and unparalleled views—head to the three-level, 107,000-square-foot Alpine Spa at the main Bürgenstock Hotel. The sanctuary is state-of-the-art all the way, from its hydrotherapy areas to the relaxation lounges equipped with duvet-topped waterbeds facing the lake and mountains. Views can also be enjoyed from the 13 treatment rooms, where therapists work their magic with products from the organic Susanne Kaufmann line. After a treatment, drift away in the indoor/outdoor pool, a large part of which wraps around the side of the building—so you’ll feel like you’re swimming above the lake itself. buergenstock.ch
