The BOC’s of Lip Gloss

by Karim Orange

Welcome to Better Organic Choice (BOC), a column focusing on makeup tips, tricks and product advice for the holistically hip. We cover the best in green glam, behind the scenes and in your face (not your traditional crunchy granola here). We are here to help you explore what you adore!

You pick your beauty team and you play for life. Sometimes you change teams (anti-aging, paraben-free), but in some way, shape or form, we all play. Even those who don’t outwardly compete play inwardly, secretly. I’m personally on one of the newest teams in the game. I’ll call my team Gorgeous and Green. We really are centuries and cultures old, but that’s for another blog post.

The rules and players are different, but the game is the game. Our mottos are “Non-toxic ingredients,” and “Beauty from the inside out.” We win beauty games with secret plays of shea butter, argan oil, mineral makeup, aloe vera, rice wax, vegan diets, yoga and Gucci shoes. Our biggest rival, whose motto is “Beauty by any means necessary,” wins beauty games with artificial fragrance, lead, red dye #4, Botox, crash diets and Gucci shoes. (Yes, Gucci shoes are universal to me, lighten up). My self-appointed team title is “The Negotiator,” helping women from both teams find a middle playing ground. I help them to find the best beauty products that don’t compromise health, performance or the environment.

Let’s start with lipstick and gloss. We can all agree that lip products should be made of ingredients that you don’t mind digesting (I’m still waiting for someone to do a coquito lip gloss). A great deal of commercial lip loves adored by team “Beauty by any means necessary” contain lead, arsenic and a bunch of other nasties. Some of the ingredients wreak havoc in the body, affecting major systems such as reproductive and endocrine. But have no fear, because Better Organic Choice is here–and look at what we found!

We love some of the wonderful lip toys by AuNaturale. Specifically we love AuNaturale’s lip crayons. They are truly for the bold at heart with intense shades and a matte finish. I know many of you like a glossy world, so I would suggest adding a gloss on top for all-day color, making it a hydrating lipstick. We also love the fact that the ingredients are as stellar as the colors. The lip crayon evokes a fun, playful feeling because of the application (like drawing), which brings out the creative child in you. We’re sure your child can’t wait to play with more products by this amazing newbie on the Green Team.

Stay tuned as we highlight some of the hottest, sustainable nail looks on the runways during New York Fashion Week. Until then, love and lipstick.
