This newish water sport of stand-up paddle boarding (or SUP) is an emerging sport with its roots in Hawaii, pioneered in the Islands by Hawaii’s premiere watermen.
An ancient pastime, the board sport has recently been re-introduced to the modern sports world, has increasingly become popular for travelers as it offers a fun workout, an adventurous pursuit for families and solo travelers alike, as well as an innovative way to experience a destination.
I tried it in Marina del Rey, Calif., and it was much easier than surfing or any sort of water skiing, The board is so wide and flat and safe! My sister paddles around the Long Island Sound on her big board every summer morning.
At the St. Regis Princeville Resort’s Stand-Up Paddle Experience, guests learn the proper stance for balance, control and paddling techniques and have the opportunity to discover one of the world’s most spectacular settings. While stand-up paddling in the resort’s surrounding waters, guests can see ocean wildlife such as turtles and dolphins and enjoy a view of the ocean and land that is like none other.
In conjunction with the Hanalei Beach Activities Company, led by ocean sports enthusiast Doug Weston-Webb and located poolside at the resort, SUP instruction is offered daily on the beach with safety details and history of the sport. Guests then venture out on own or reserve a guided exploration around Hanalei River or majestic Hanalei Bay.
I went two years ago and while I did not SUP, I loved the view from The St. Regis Princeville Resort. Perched on the cliffs of Kauai’s North Shore, and opened in October of 2009 following a steep renovation. The resort plays homage to the island’s beautiful land and vibrant culture and boasts stunning views of Hanalei Bay and Mt. Makana, the 10,000 square foot spa and infinity pool are heavenly.
