“Healthy candy” sure sounds like an oxymoron, if ever there was one. But as Halloween approaches, the thought of all those artificial colors and flavors, high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated fats and chemical preservatives in traditional Halloween candy can be a nightmare for parents who normally feed their children a healthy, balanced diet.

Although it’s a stretch to call any candy “healthy,” we thought we’d share our picks for organic candy that is much “healthier.” It may be a good idea to slip some of these into your child’s trick or treat bag!

Organic Candy Factory. Founded by Piper Cochrane and her eight-year-old daughter, Ginger, these gummy worms and little gummy bears are free of gluten, gelatin, preservatives, pesticides, nuts, GMOs, corn syrup and artificial flavors, colors and sweeteners. Plus, they are vegan, and made in the US. Most important, your kids will love them!

The company donates a portion of proceeds to Hope North, a Ugandan community that helps refugees, orphans and former child soldiers, supported by Organic Candy Factory friend Forest Whitaker. organiccandyfactory.com

Justin’s. Every time I’m at a Natural Products Expo, I can’t help myself from sampling Justin’s Peanut Butter Cups. My personal preference is the dark chocolate, but I hear that the milk chocolate is just as good. And the company just launched a white chocolate version, which I tried on a dare from a friend who knows that I am not a white chocolate fan. But these were really good! The candy is organic and fair trade and the packaging is sustainable.

Best of all, the kids will never know the difference, except that these taste even better than your traditional peanut butter cup brands! justins.com

Unreal. The morning after Halloween, a 13-year-old boy awoke to find that his dad had confiscated most of his candy. Understandably angry, he  set out to prove to his dad that the candy wasn’t so bad for him. But what he found—chemicals, corn syrup and boatloads of sugar—led to the creation of Unreal, with grass-fed dairy, cacao, no GMOs, no corn syrup, gluten- and preservative-free. getunreal.com
