What inspired you to launch True Nature Botanicals?
I am inspired by our mission to show women that they deserve better. To help them realize that the most effective skincare products and the most luxurious and nourishing hair care products do not need to be made with toxins.
So many women do not think that products made with an abundance of natural, organic and carefully selected safe synthetic ingredients, such as L-ascorbic acid, can be transformative. We know this to be true and we have the clinical trials to prove it.
It is exciting to be changing perceptions and helping to evolve an industry. One thing that makes our work easier is our ability to sell direct via the internet. Thanks to our ability to cut out the middle man, we can spend as much as we need to on the safest, most effective ingredients.
We believe that in order to achieve the best results with predominantly natural products, safe synthetics like retinol and L-ascorbic acid—the most proven anti-agers available—should not be excluded.
You launched fragrance recently. What pulls you toward scent?
I have always been drawn to scent and how it can capture a moment. Whether it’s spices in the kitchen, flowers in the garden or resins that punctuate a walk in the woods, scent is such a powerful way to connect with the beauty of a moment and place in time.
With our solid perfume line, I wanted to develop three scents that gave us access to the beauty of nature in three very different ways. Each scent is exclusively crafted with an abundance of 100 percent natural “noble materials”–known to be the purest and most precious in the world. We worked with one of the oldest fragrance houses and asked them to use the very best ingredients that they could find from all around the world, such as the finest vetiver from Haiti, the most beautiful Turkish rose and the purest Moroccan Neroli.
You are a thyroid cancer and melanoma survivor, how did that factor into TNB?
My prior health challenges inform every choice that we make regarding safety. We are completely transparent and committed to the safety of our customers and the environment. Although we do not always have all of the answers, we know the right questions to ask and we have an incredible advisory board that helps us keep our products on the cutting edge and as safe as possible.
What are some of your pet peeves about traditional skincare lines and what would you like to see change?
I hate to see the bottom line prioritized over safety. When I see some of the ingredients being used out there, it is clear to me that many consumers would be better off using nothing at all. To me, the biggest offense is the lack of transparency that I unfortunately see way too often. All companies should tell the truth and let consumers decide what is important to them.
