All Natural Skin Care

by Celia Shatzman

When it comes to all-natural skincare, fresh fruits and vegetables are on the beauty menu

COCONUT

“A great moisturizer, it makes a fantastic replacement for petroleum, which is commonly used,” says Marrone. “It also has antifungal and antibacterial properties, which is great for blemish prone skin.” Plus, coconut reduces the appearance of pores and Vitamin E smooths and protects skin from harmful UV rays.

CUCUMBER

“Traditionally known as a refreshing ingredient, cucumber is also a fantastic brightener and works very well to even out tone,” says Marrone. We all know the power of cucumber slices over our eyes—the antioxidants decrease swelling and puffiness, and cucumbers can also speed up the healing process from sunburn because of their natural cooling properties. “Cucumbers contain tons of silica, which helps exfoliate and brighten, and are great for sensitive skin,” Jackel says.

GRAPEFRUIT

The breakfast staple lifts and tones, making it ideal for firming. It’s also rich in antioxidants, so it’s a great healer. “The high content of Vitamin A, aka retinol, is a powerful ingredient known for combatting acne,” Hill says. “The difference is that Vitamin A found in nature is much more gentle.” Grapefruit promotes the production of collagen, making skin plumper, reducing fine lines and wrinkles. It is also a great exfoliator, toner and acne fighter.

MUSHROOMS

“A hidden gem in the skincare industry, they are rich in proteins, lipids, vitamins and amino acids, and can help improve acne, eczema and rosacea,” says Hill. Mushrooms have anti-inflammatory properties; are rich in Vitamin D, selenium and antioxidants; protect your skin against environmental damage; and help reduce redness.

TOMATO

“Sophia Loren swore by a skincare regimen of tomato puree and olive oil for many years,” Hill says. “She was definitely onto something—we now know that lycopene found in tomatoes is protective against the risk of skin cancer, and can give you a bright glow.” Plus, they’re packed with lutein, a potent antioxidant that helps fight wrinkles, and tomatoes also clear the skin of impurities, tighten pores, balance pH and cure acne.
