Keeping Him Warm

By Myron Mariano / August 31, 2012

Menswear designers have made great strides with garments that are every bit as good-looking as they are green. And many retailers have turned a sustainable eye toward the clothes-making process, in a market segment that, according to MarketLine, is expected to grow by 13.9 percent in 2016. Made with reused scrap fabrics, responsibly acquired wool, or organic cotton, here are jackets, coats, and vests to suit his eco-minded sensibility.

KEY PIECE: PhD SmartLoft jacket by SmartWool

Who says a down jacket can’t be stylish enough for a night out? When it’s as streamlined and slim-fitting as this one, all you need to complete the look is a pair of slim pants and a chunky scarf. The company is Zque-accredited, a program that ensures environmental, social, and economic sustainability for growers of merino wool.

Worn with: Organic Cotton polo, Pure Organic Merino Wool scarf, hessnatur; Wax On pants, Nau

KEY PIECE: Legacy Trench coat by Icebreaker

A substantial coat offers great protection from the chill. Made with renewable, recyclable, and biodegradable merino wool, and you can trace the sheep farm where it came from using the unique “Baacode” stitched on the garment.

Worn with: Organic Pima Cotton shirt, Patagonia; Teton Hood hoodie, Icebreaker; Saxton Cord pants, Prana; Iroko shoes, El Naturalista

KEY PIECE: Aire WI Vest by Ibex

A little more thought about what to wear is needed when you’re biking. Coats with bulky sleeves will keep you warm, but can be restrictive. Opt for a vest that offers warmth while freeing up your arms. This two-color model from Ibex is made of 100 percent corn polymer and features a recycled nylon shell.

Worn with: Quest Zip T-shirt, Icebreaker; Jaxson beanie, Prana; Baggies shorts, Patagonia; Energy Tight tights, Ibex; Quantum Glove gloves, Icebreaker; Mv2 Speed Racer, Newton Running

KEY PIECE: Throwback jacket by Horny Toad

Layer a structured blazer over a shirt and chinos, for a smart look for 9-to-5. (This one is lined with 90 percent recycled polyester.) The same piece paired with dark denims is a killer combination once you clock out.
