Beauty Benefits of Turmeric

Turmeric, the stunning golden spice known as ginger's cousin, has been a mainstay in kitchens in India, China and the Middle East for centuries. The bright, flavorful, aromatic powder, derived from a bulbous rhizome (Curcuma longa), adds color to everything from food to fabric-and can also stain fingers, so watch out!

Turmeric's active ingredient, curcumin, offers a laundry list of healing properties.

"Turmeric is a wonderfully balancing herb with antibacterial, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, in addition to having a high antioxidant content," says Dr. Pratima Raichur, Ayurvedic doctor and founder, Pratima Skincare. "Turmeric helps defend the skin against environmental factors, maintaining youth and radiance."

It also contains iron, manganese, potassium and vitamin B6 and has been used in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries. But in the Western world, who knew that turmeric offers so many beauty benefits?

For those with sensitive skin conditions like rosacea or eczema, turmeric can soothe flare-ups. Curcumin helps reduce the bacteria and balance oil production that can lead to breakouts. Plus, it keeps skin looking smooth and radiant.

It even helps with bug bites. At The Art of Living Center in Boone, NC, the Director of the Ayurveda Program spotted the itchy outbreak around my elbow and knew just what I should do. "Make a paste with turmeric and ghee," she said. "You will feel better right away." And guess what? I did.
