Scalp Scrubs

We’ll let you in on a little secret: The scalp is the root to beautiful, healthy hair.

“If you have an irritated or unhealthy scalp it will show in your hair,” says Nancy Twine, Founder and CEO of Briogeo. “Our scalp is exposed daily to pollution, environmental factors, plus the harsh ingredients found in many hair care products. This, along with the daily use of products on your hair builds up over time, which leads to clogged pores and irritation. Once you start using a scalp scrub you will instantly see a difference in the health of your hair.”

After all, you wouldn’t go for months without exfoliating the skin on your face or body to remove dead skin cells, and the same idea applies to your scalp. “After using a scalp scrub your hair will be shinier, cleaner, and healthier,” Twine says. “Additionally, just like body and face exfoliators, using a scalp scrub will also help increase circulation!”

To get the most out of your scrub, Twine suggests looking for one with natural plant-based exfoliators. “These tend to be more gentle and less irritating for sensitive scalps,” she says. “I would also recommend tea tree, vitamin E, and B5 for overall scalp health. Tea tree oil is a powerhouse oil; using it in a scalp scrub can help clear out dry skin and flakiness on your scalp and hair follicle. Vitamin E and B5 are excellent for overall scalp health; their benefits include being high in antioxidants and essential moisturizing properties.”

Stick to a schedule of using a scalp scrub once or twice a week in place of your regular shampoo, and follow with your favorite conditioner on the ends of your hair. “It's important to note that scalp scrubs should not be used in place of your regular shampoo,” says Twine. “Using it once or twice a week allows you to maintain natural scalp balance.”
