Skincare Perks of the Autumn Harvest

by Celia Shatzman

Fall’s bounty isn’t just beneficial at the farmers’ market—it’s also great for your skin

Plucking a crisp apple from a branch. Walking through a pumpkin patch in search of just the right gourd. Sprinkling fresh cinnamon over—well, just about anything. There’s nothing quite like fall produce and the cornucopia of beauty products spotlighting those ingredients proves it’s also great for your skin. Just like we should switch up our diet with the changing of the seasons, the same should go for our skincare.

“As the seasons change, so do your skin cravings,” says Angela Kim, founder of Savor Beauty. “There are seasonal ingredients that provide the skin with what it may need as the weather changes. For instance, in the fall, the skin usually needs more nourishment and hydration. Pumpkin, a fall favorite, is a nourishing beauty ingredient with nutrients and fruit enzymes, which increase cell turnover, to brighten and smooth the skin.”

Don’t let your plate have all the fun. Maximize the fall by adding a few seasonal ingredients to your beauty routine. Kim shares the skincare perks of autumn bounty.

Pumpkin: “Pumpkin contains vitamins A and C, zinc and nutrients to brighten the skin and boost collagen for juicy, hydrated skin,” Kim says. Try: Savor Beauty Pumpkin Seed Renew Serum; savorbeauty.com

Cranberry: “The acid in cranberries’ skin-loving vitamins A and C boosts collagen production, fights free radicals, reduces wrinkles and fine lines, and keeps skin moisturized,” Kim notes. Try: Herbivore Botanicals Moon Fruit Superfruit Night Treatment; herbivorebotanicals.com

Pear: “Pear fibers keep skin smooth and soft, helping balance skin moisture to stay hydrated,” Kim says. “Here’s an easy DIY mask: Mix crushed pear with a little cream and honey for a clarifying oily skin mask.” Try: Acure Organics Body Beautiful Pear & Fig Shampoo; acure.com

Pomegranate: “Pomegranates are loaded with antioxidants, vitamins K and C, potassium, copper, zinc and iron that help clarify and hydrate the skin,” Kim says. “The secret ingredient that makes pomegranates such a skin-power ingredient is ellagic acid, an antioxidant that reduces collagen breakdown.” Try: Pangea Organics Himalayan Geranium & Pomegranate Balancing Oil; pangeaorganics.com

Cinnamon: “Cinnamon is a fantastic ingredient to clarify skin and unclog pores,” Kim says. “Studies even show that cinnamon can promote collagen, making this an all-around skin superfood.” Try: Eminence Organics Cinnamon Paprika Body Lotion; eminenceorganics.com
