Herbs To Beat Inflammation

by Daniella Saul

You may not pay as much attention to the garnish on your plate as the meal itself. Yet under-appreciated herbs provide not only a variety of flavors, but also unique benefits for overall well-being. Used to ease ailments from hypertension to acne to the occasional stomachache, as well as boost the immune system and beat inflammation, the nutrients needed to benefit your overall health may be found in a bunch of fresh herbs.

ROSEMARY
Hidden behind its delicious savory flavor is a wealth of nutritional benefits. From supporting the immune system to improving memory, rosemary has proved its worth as a staple herb for centuries in the Mediterranean. This kitchen essential can also calm an upset stomach and strengthen the immune system.

SAGE
Revered for its earthy scent and distinct flavor, sage is often used in northern Mediterranean cuisine, where it is stirred into pasta or sprinkled on top of pork or beef.

High in vitamins K and A, as well as calcium and folic acid, sage is also used in cosmetic products for its calming aroma and astringent, blemish-busting powers.

THYME
Thyme has been a prized herb of both the ancient Greeks and Egyptians, widely used for its pleasant flavor and fragrance. B-complex vitamins and a very high concentration of anti-inflammatory antioxidants make this herb a key component of healthy diets across the globe.

BASIL
Sky-high levels of vitamin K are found in the leaves of basil, a summery herb known for its use in Italian cuisine. Fresh basil can add a mild but mouth-watering hint of flavor and color to your next meal, as well as a healthy dose of antioxidants.

GARLIC
Not technically an herb, but frequently blended with herbs, garlic has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties and has been used to lower blood pressure. Allicin, the key chemical found in garlic, gives it both a distinct odor and a variety of health benefits.

OREGANO
An herb rich in vitamins, oregano is also a powerful antibacterial, as well as a good source of fiber and great source of vitamin K. Sprinkle it on pizza or pasta for a boost of flavor and nutrients.
