Traveling with Your Dog

The Dog Lover’s Guide to Travel by Kelly E. Carter is an engaging guide to over 75 pet-friendly hotels, restaurants, and other dog-friendly attractions across the U.S. and Canada. Carter—-who has traveled with Lucy, a Chihuahua, for over 10 years—spoke with Organic Spa Magazine recently.

Which destinations would you recommend for an organic canine getaway?

Kelly E. Carter: A spa in Honolulu called Cocojor Emporium & Spaw, which is heavenly and uses all-natural products. Another place that offers a unique experience is Domaine Summum, a dog-friendly wilderness resort about 80 miles northwest of Montreal.

Are there any spas that tend to both dogs and people, a “furs and hers” sort of spa?

KC: There’s La Quinta Resort near Palm Springs, where Lucy and I enjoyed a “Me & My Best Buddy” side-by-side massage in the Canine Suite.

What are your favorite places for camping and “ruffing” it?

KC: I prefer to go “glamping” with my pampered pooch at The Resort at Paws Up in Greenough, MT, about 35 minutes from downtown Missoula.

Of everywhere you’ve traveled, what is your favorite trip?

KC: I’ve had so many special trips with Lucy, such as our trip to Cabo San Lucas when she had her first massage—on the terrace of our casita at Esperanza Resort.

Would Lucy agree?

KC: Lucy can be quite the diva dog, but after that massage by one of her peeps (she is Chihuahua, you know, and we were in Mexico), she was a blissful bow-wow.
