DIY Natural Massage Oils

by Mary Beth Janssen

Some of my favorite natural massage oils for skin-nourishing and anti-inflammatory benefits include chamomile, clary sage, orange blossom, geranium, lavender, peppermint, rosemary, sandalwood, ylang-ylang and last, but not least, rose and rose hips. These can be highly effective when mixed with carrier oils for self-massage.

Massage Oil Recipe

Depending on your personal preference, you can blend different oils in desired proportions. If you like, you can warm this massage oil to body temperature before applying it by placing the bottle in a bowl of very hot water for a few minutes:

15 drops essential oil of choice
2 tablespoons plant oil, such as sweet almond oil, avocado oil, hazelnut oil, evening primrose oil, jojoba oil and so on

In  a small bottle with a dispenser top, combine the essential oil and plant oil and shake to blend.

Massage Ritual

You may do this at any time of the day, whenever you have time and feel the need. It’s especially helpful in the morning before showering, and it helps to center you for the day ahead, while at night it can be part of a relaxation ritual to encourage deep, restful sleep.

Work the oil between your hands, then massage into your skin, giving loving attention to the entire body or to specific areas that need special care. If doing a full-body massage, start at the scalp and gently massage from head to toe. Where appropriate, use upward and outward movements. At the very least, massage your scalp, hands, and feet.

Be fully present with yourself while performing this ritual. Any tension that you feel will melt away during this mood-enhancing practice.
