For a self-proclaimed cold-weather hotspot, folks sure do kick up their heels at “Mountains of Adventure” at Lake Monocan in Wintergreen, Virginia. In fact, this stately all-weather resort and spa offers tubing and boating hijinks on cool lake waters. Accessible and affordable adventure for the whole family, Wintergreen Resort’s teen tennis camps and world-class hiking trails around Devil’s Knob also attract active guests from all over the world.

Wintergreen goes the distance on high-energy adventures with an interesting, guided zip-line tour and tall climbing wall that seem to keep both teens and adults busy for hours. In addition to more thrilling offerings like archery programs and the giant bungee trampoline, guests may take their weary bones over to the Wintergreen Spa for the cooling and revitalizing signature summer treatment Lemon Verbena Refresher ($105 for 50 minutes) made with natural, organic raw salts, unadulterated sugars and homemade essential oils that rehydrate your skin and battle the bracing alpine air.

The Lemon Verbena Refresher starts with a vigorous full-body salt scrub, then, post-shower, your massage therapist applies lemon verbena oils in long, strong Swedish strokes. It concludes with hot stones massaged lightly along the back of your body. While the Spa uses Eminence for face and Prive products for hair, their own spa products are in demand: Wintergreen’s Woodsprite homemade product line uses only certified organic ingredients—no chemicals or harsh fillers.

Their Woodsprite soaps, botanical lotions and soy aromatherapy candles are lovingly made entirely by hand in small batches, enabling Woodsprite to maintain their high standard of purity. Other luscious local herbs and plants incorporated into Wintergreen spa treatments are:

• Organic grapeseed and pure sunflower oils for moisturizing and anti-aging,
• Roman chamomile and ylang ylang for toning your dehydrated skin,
• organic wildflowers to brighten your skin tone,
• coconut oils and olive oils to remove epidermal impurities, and
• organic lavender and cedar wood to calm your complexion.

To hit a wintery spa in the summer and explore new fitness options, try Wintergreen Resort in the idle of summer. While mom and pop hit the spa, children of all ages have a billion adventurous things to occupy them safely for hours, and overnight summer rates start off-season at only $99.
