At Rest
Pg 73 - From Yearning to Learning to Sleep

Claudia Micco is a former insomniac. She's also the mind-body-fitness director at the recently renovated Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, where she created the Sleep Fit program. A lively and energetic woman, Micco shows no signs of the sleep deprivation she once suffered. "Over the last 15 years, I've been experimenting with various techniques that include regular exercise, healthy eating, and self-hypnosis to overcome insomnia without the use of drugs or alcohol," relates Micco, who has used these techniques with her clients. "True rest cannot occur unless the mind is settled. Once we can fall asleep we can dream, we can work out those things that the mind is processing, and the body can rest." The Sleep Fit program is offered as a class that comes complete with floral arrangements, specially designed mats, head and eye pillows, and cozy blankets. Restful music plays softly in the background, and the class begins with a simple deep-breathing exercise and a brief discussion of the sleep and wake cycles, as well as the common barriers to a good night's sleep. Sleep rituals are introduced and practiced (from stretching, breathing, and aromatherapy practices), and massage therapists are on hand to massage your head and feet. "The class finale is a twenty-minute real time practice nap," says Micco. Turn to page 76 for her 10 top sleep tips. www.ritzcarlton.com - Mary Bemis
