The View From Jara Spa in Phuket

by Sandra Ramani

Though Phuket is one of Thailand’s busiest beach destinations, you’d never know it once past the gates of Trisara. Spread out over 40 acres of old-growth rainforest, lush with bamboo trees and flowering tropical plants and fronting a secluded beach leading to the tranquil Andaman Sea, the resort houses a mix of villas and suites each featuring views of the water from its bed, bathtub and private infinity pool.

The views become even more sweeping up at the hillside Jara Spa, where the lounge and individual treatment villas frame soothing sea and garden vistas. Outfitted with indoor and outdoor relaxation areas, the villas provide an idyllic setting for treatments that draw from both traditional Thai and hyper-local healing traditions. Among the latter is a massage performed with a heated, cloth-wrapped clay pot that’s been filled with mineral-rich Himalayan salt—a deeply relaxing therapy inspired by a postnatal ritual enjoyed by women of this region.

Under the direction of a passionate director (himself a former monk), the recently revamped spa has expanded its menu to include unique signature services (like the truly transportive Royal Six-Hand Massage) and more wellness-based offerings, including walking meditations and Thai-style stretching yoga. There are also plans to offer experiences in partnership with the resort’s 200-acre organic farm. The spa has also developed a house product line made with 100 percent organic Thai ingredients—including extra-virgin coconut oil harvested just a 30-minute boat ride from Trisara’s shores.
