Supplemental Skin Care

by Liz Robins

It’s an inescapable fact of growing older: As we age, the rate of collagen breakdown in our bodies eventually exceeds the rate at which it can be replaced. Considering that collagen is the main structural component of the dermis (the lower layer of skin) that helps make skin strong, it’s no surprise that diminishing amounts of this protein contribute to sagging, dullness, wrinkles, and other visible signs of aging. Sun exposure and other environmental stressors only compound the effects.

Collagen supplements offer one potential strategy in the fight to help keep skin strong and supple as the years pass. Collagen M.D.’s Advanced Connective Tissue Formula, for example, combines pharmaceutical-grade bovine collagen peptides (Types I and III collagen, the forms most prominent in skin) with B vitamins and other supportive ingredients to help maintain smooth, healthy skin. Vitamin C supports collagen synthesis in the body, and hyaluronic acid (derived from rooster combs) acts as a tissue lubricant and is sometimes referred to as “nature’s moisturizer” due to its hydrating effects. It’s another component of our skin that declines with age, leaving skin looking drier and less plump.

In addition to observing improvements in skin’s texture and appearance, people taking Advanced Connective Tissue Formula often report stronger nails and hair and faster hair growth, says Terry Quadri, vice-president of Collagen M.D. Of course, short of a time machine, there’s no getting back to the wrinkle-free, dewy glow of our youth. But highly bio-available collagen supplements might at least help you make the most of the skin you’re in.

Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding and those on low protein diets for kidney health are advised against taking this supplement.
