Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf

There are times when you wake up in a hotel room and think: I could be anywhere right now. But the very best hotel experiences come when they’re unique to the destination. As in, you just feel it when you're there.

There are times when you wake up in a hotel room and think: I could be anywhere right now. But the very best hotel experiences come when they’re unique to the destination. As in, you just feel it when you're there. And perhaps no property does the whole sense-of-place better than Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf St Barth

Opened in 2020, this five-star resort overlooking Gustavia has just 21 rooms, suites, and bungalows–most of which have private plunge pools. Here, guests are greeted by name in an open-air lobby, which then extends to the high-end restaurant Beefbar. During the day, I relaxed at the hotel’s Shellona beach club, and took dips in the blue waters. Come evening, I mingled with a sea of stylish guests, swathed in silk caftans, sipping Champagne at sunset.

As it happens, those chic guests fit in perfectly with the surroundings. The aesthetics come courtesy of French interior designers Gilles & Boissier, who’ve created a tropical high-end beach-chic vibe with prints of punchy greens and dusty pinks. Beyond aesthetics, the hotel manages to nail the details. I found a glass of water placed near the side of the bed where I'd been sleeping. There’s a robe in breezy cotton for the humid climate. And the slippers managed to perfectly fit my small feet–like a Caribbean Cinderella.

But for all of the pops of color surrounding the property, the Spa Diane Barrière offers a serene oasis. Think of it as the epitome of stealth wealth. Here, you’ll find a small gym and activities such as yoga and Pilates. But a sprawling space this is not, and that’s the beauty. The details have gone into perfecting each treatment, such as the thorough analysis before my facial.

And what a facial it was! The facial at Spa Diane takes it up a notch with the Biologique Recherche product line that made my parched skin feel as bouncy as a trampoline and as dewy as a pre-teen.

I had good intentions to hit the nearby treadmill, but after my facial, I had no desire to break a sweat. The solution? Have the staff place an aquabike in your plunge pool so that you pedal with your head above water–all while preserving that post-facial glow.
