The Sureness of the Soul
"People are drawn to us because of the organic options and because we offer really great services in a beautiful setting," explains Tiffany Cannon, co-founder of Chicago's Silken Tent, an 11,000-square-foot eco-friendly day spa. "They see that organic can be sexy and effective, not necessarily 'granola' and 'crunchy' and boring." Cannon and co-founder Sherri Stewart drew inspiration for the spa's name from the Robert Frost poem, "The Silken Tent," written in 1942. "That poem captured our essence," relates Cannon. The poem refers to a "supporting central cedar pole/ That is its pinnacle to heavenward/ And signifies the sureness of the soul." Says Cannon, "We see ourselves as the supporting central cedar pole. Six years ago, when we started on our journey of creating this spa, we discovered through a number of focus groups that there wasn't a place in the Chicago area with a focus on nurturing women and making them feel good and at peace. We created a place that really honors the individual and supports and nourishes one's spirit."
