SPIRIT

Of the Earth
The Medicine Helper is one of the most-requested treatments at Sunrise Springs Resort Spa in Santa Fe, New Mexico. You'll find this special signature treatment among the offerings on the very unique Transformative Menu. Spa director Cari Cohen, who describes the spa as "sincere and heart-centered" created the menu a little over a year ago. "These are treatments that heal from the inside out," she explains. "They're life-changing, life-inspiring, and transformational treatments that offer a whole other level of healing." The 80-minute Medicine Helper is given by a therapist named Concha-a curandera or traditional folk healer-from Oaxaca. During the treatment, Native prayers are sung and fresh herbs from the spa's biodynamic gardens are used for varying purposes. "This treatment connects one to oneself in a very spiritual and sacred way," says Cohen. "When the curandera takes herbs from the garden, she always replaces them. She brings her sacred relationship to the Earth to the people she works with. It's very enlightening and inspiring." Some of the herbs most commonly used are: rosemary to claim one's power and defend oneself; basil to provide support in speaking the truth; sage to answer questions; and cedar, which is used for forgiveness.
