Small Steps Towards A More Sustainable Wardrobe

by Elke Erschfeld

You don’t know how to begin greening your clothes? Why not start with a pair of socks. It’s the little changes in life that will end up having a big impact on the environment. Especially when it’s as easy as with the many styles of organic socks from zkano. The company’s ladies fashion sock collection has organic over the knee socks, anklet socks or even slouch socks with stripes, polka dots or big color blocks. All socks are made with certified organic cotton that’s produced according to NOP standards and spun at a GOTS certified factory. The colors are vibrant hues of violet, yellow, tangerine, and lime tastefully combined with grey or black. They are dyed with low impact dyes. You can build your own custom 3-pack by choosing any 3 styles to create a personalized holiday gift.

Zkano is based in Fort Payne, Alabama, formerly nicknamed the “Official Sock Capital Of The World”. I personally find it very sad that this is not the case anymore. Over the last decade out of 125 sock mills only 10 are still in operation based on an article in the WSJ. Most of the manufacturing and production went overseas which drove many family businesses to close. Coming from a family business myself I know that it not only creates local jobs but also provides a sense of social connections within the community. Whenever I can I try to support local businesses. The daughter of Terry Locklear, the founder of the family business Emi-G Knitting, created zkano to combine her passion for green living with the family tradition. Today each pair of socks is knit with certified organic cotton at the family mill in Fort Payne, Alabama. The cute sock designs prove that organic cotton doesn’t have to look boring. You can wear slouch socks for lounging at home or you can pair over the knee socks with leggings or miniskirts. The latter make a green yet colorful statement and are a great conversation starter to talk about why it’s important to buy organic. Now you can reduce your ecological footprint in style. Or make that many styles.
