Skin Deep: Reducing Fine Lines

Wrinkles! Everyone eventually gets at least a few. However, do consider the following when reducing fine lines and staving off wrinkles.

Although prescription vitamin A derivatives (retinoids) have long been the gold standard for anti-aging skin care, over-the-counter cosmeceuticals and highly efficacious plant-based alternatives have certainly gained ground in the beauty/aesthetics and dermatology worlds. These creams and lotions can contain alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), antioxidants as well as retinol (derived from vitamin A).

Studies show that AHAs (derived from milk, apples, citrus and more) and retinoids can boost collagen production and slough off the skin’s outer surface, which combined softens wrinkles and improves skin elasticity, tone and texture.

Antioxidants like vitamin C, green/white teas and grape seed extract (along with its derivative resveratrol) aim to control the free radicals that break down collagen, leading to premature aging. These products must be used consistently over time to see benefit.

But aside from all this, dermatologists across the board say that the most important skin care product is the one we should all be using faithfully—sunscreen. (Make your sun protection chemical-free please to reduce risk of toxicity! Look for “natural” sunscreens that contain zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or a combination of the two, listed as “active ingredients.”) I personally love my Badger’s non-nano zinc oxide brand.
