SUSTAINABLE FASHION POSTER 5_30_13

If you’re in NYC this week, you won’t want to miss the Sustainable Fashion, Health and Beauty Conference at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology), from July 10-12 at John E. Reeves Great Hall and Conference Center, on the south side of 28th street just west of 7th Avenue. The kickoff conference was fabulous last year, and this year promises to exceed all expectations, with a fantastic lineup of experts who will lead exciting panel discussions and hand’s-on workshops.

The event opens with remarks from Christine HelmFIT Enterprise Center and Lisa Hendrickson, Mistress of Ceremonies.

Head on over to a panel discussion on Ethical Fashion and Fair Trade, moderated by Carmen Artigas, sustainable fashion designer, consultant, educator; with Sophie Faris of B-Lab; Ruth DeGolia, founder, Mercado Global; Francisca Pineda, designer and creative director, BHAVA; and Tanya Menendez, co-founder, Maker’s Row.

Jane Tabachnick, online strategy, marketing, and public relations expert, will moderate Sustainable Business: Marketing, Packaging and Claims in Fashion & Beauty, featuring Deanna Clark, fashion compliance and international trade specialist; Kristen Arnett, eco-makeup artist and founder, The Green Beauty Team; Naomi Pearson, sustainable graphic design consultant and Jasmin Malik Chua, managing editor, Ecouterre.

Additional workshops will feature Katharine L’Heureux, founder, Kahina Giving Beauty and Shirley Pinkson, co-founder, W3LL People.

Holly Henderson, eco fashion/textile designer, consultant, assistant adjunct professor at FITWorkshops, will moderate a panel on Sustainable Color and Textile Trends, with Fran Yoshioka, independent color and trend forecasting consultant; Kathy Hattori, founder and president, Botanical Colors; and Emily Spivack, writer, editor, artist, social entrepreneur.

When I attended the Conference last year, it was all about sustainable fashion and it struck me: there is so much to say about sustainable beauty these days, and beauty is absolutely intertwined with fashion. So I spoke with the organizers, who graciously agreed, and offered me the opportunity to bring in the beauty piece. Yours truly will be moderating a panel on Sustainable Beauty: Are your Beauty Products Hazardous to Your Health? on July 11, with Karim Orange, make-up artist and green beauty activist; Indie Lee, founder and CEO, Indie Lee & Co.; and Ginger Potter, special education specialist, Environmental Protection Agency. We’ll cover what sustainable beauty means, hot-button ingredients, what to look for/avoid and why, why sourcing is so important, how the industry is regulated, what is the impact on the environment and why we should care. Come and see us!

On Friday July 12, Conscious fashion writer Amy Dufault will lead a Sustainable Fashion Tour of NYC. Participants will enjoy breakfast with the Eileen Fisher sustainability team and a tour of Nanette Lepore’s studio in the Fashion District.

The Conference will close at 6 pm with a Sustainable Fashion Mixer and Fashion Show sponsored by Fair Trade Coalition.
