Fair Trade Month

by Tess Donelon

October is Fair Trade Month, a time to shine the spotlight on conscious consumers, sustainability and a respect for farmers and workers. “Fair trade is a global movement that connects people closer to the lives of producers who make their goods and farm their food. It imagines a world where fair and just treatment for work are the norm, rather than the exception,” says Kasi Martin, spokesperson for Fair Trade USA.

If you’re not familiar with Fair Trade, but want to change your footprint for good, this is the time to hone in on the impact you have with every single purchase and economic decision you make, no matter how big or small. The Fair Trade-certified seal indicates that a business has gone through a rigorous certification process and met criteria of sustainability, social responsibility, fair wages, ethical working conditions and more. “Fair Trade USA enables this by certifying more than 40,000 products that help ensure farmers, workers and fishers can build sustainable livelihoods for themselves and their communities,” Martin continues, “Seeking Fair Trade Certified products is more vital than ever right now.”

Fair Trade USA launched a series of virtual events for the month of October to raise awareness around the Fair Trade seal and help farmers and workers in need, now more than ever. Some of the events viewers can expect, if they choose to join this exciting endeavor, are listed below.

Within the event, guests will be able to take what they’ve learned and heard and apply it to their everyday lives, and to making a difference in someone else’s. Additionally, to truly educate guests on the positive impact of Fair Trade, there will be a series of producer stories and videos, showing the personal side of this inspiring movement. "Fair trade helps provide farmers a vital safety net during this difficult time and empowers them to use their funds for community development and Covid-19 relief efforts to stay the course."
