Detox from Sugar in 3 Weeks

by Nicole Dorsey Straff

Sugar is the new controlled substance, it seems, and the average American consumes up to 31 whopping pounds per year, according to The Sugar Detox (Da Capo Press 2013) written by Brooke Alpert, MS, RD, CDN and Dr. Patricia Farris, FAAD, a renowned New York dermatologist.

Much of the book packs in fascinating research on the significant chemical impact of sugar on your skin, along with and other systems of your body. Designed to boost your overall nutrition, activate fat loss and clear up your complexion all over, the authors offer smart-but-simple food recipes (frittatas and grilled halibut, for example) plus practical advice on instigating a slow sugar wean from some of your favorite foods, including dried fruit and diet soda.

Some of the more predictable chapters of The Sugar Detox cover the positive exercise connection (less sugar equals a fitter you), and the “success stories” of patients who have successfully moved through this the 3-week plan and who feel more energetic and clear-headed.

One of the most interesting sections explains how certain spices — including ginger, turmeric, cinnamon and cloves – help moderate sugar metabolism and jumpstart your detox.

America’s excess consumption of sugar, from the corn syrup on your pancakes to the pineapple topping on your Hawaiian pizza, adds to the obesity epidemic. On this diet, which I tried for days, I found it surprising that many supposedly “healthy” foods were off-limits due to their sky high sugar content and I bet you will be, too!

  • Beets
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Summer Squash
  • Watermelon
  • Raisins
  • Prunes
  • Flavored yogurts
  • Fruit juice

What do you eat that has too much sugar? And could you stick to a deprivation detox diet for three long weeks?
