Knowing Your Color Chakras

by Mary Beth Janssen
Understanding color chakras can explain why your body is drawn to certain colors

Color Chakras can affect our energy, mood and well-being. You may gravitate toward certain colors because of the way they make you feel. In fact, your color preference may indicate that your body needs/craves it. And the pleasant response you have to a certain color may be a thank you from your energy system.

Color and Our Color Chakras

Color can profoundly affect our energy fields, creating changes in the mind and body. In Ayurveda, color therapy is an integral part of healing via the senses. Warm and bright reds, oranges and yellows stimulate as well as boost energy and strength. Greens and blues cool, soothe, cleanse and balance. Muted oranges, yellows and golds, deep purple and indigo calm anxiety and restlessness. Purple induces lightness of being and enhances intuition.

We also relate color to the chakra system. We each have seven major energy centers, or chakras.  Each is a spiritual opening in the body where subtle energies can enter and leave. Chakras process subtle energy and convert it into chemical, hormonal, and cellular changes in the body, and each has a color that optimally balances it.

For instance, if you feel you need help with your fifth chakra, our energetic center of communication in the throat area—then bring as much blue into your life as possible. Eat blueberries, wear blue jeans, look at the brilliant day-blue sky, paint your walls blue, and consider accessorizing your surroundings with blue. And importantly, when you visualize, color the images you see with lots of healing blue!

A brief overview of the chakra colors:

Red is the color of the root chakra, located at the base of the spine. In its highest manifestation, red expresses divine will, because the root chakra is at the center of our survival. Red vitalizes and stimulates. It is responsible for a sound physical body, because it affects our circulatory system, digestion and elimination. When these systems aren’t working harmoniously, you might feel tremendous fatigue. Red helps maintain the skin’s color, and gives energy to nerve tissue and bone marrow.

Orange is the color of the sacral chakra, seen as the center of fertility, both creative and sexual (birthing ideas as well as children!). Orange expresses wisdom in its greatest form, and gives energy and strength to the reproductive organs. Orange can also relieve depression brought on by insecurity and fear, and can build self-esteem through creative and intellectual stimulation.

Yellow is the color of the solar-plexus chakra, expressing the divine intellect, because this chakra is where you form opinions based on all subtle energetic levels of sensation. These sensations and your reactions to them allow you to develop a strong sense of self.  Yellow illuminates and inspires, allowing your higher consciousness to develop. It promotes all forms of mental activity, and also stimulates optimism.

Green is the color of the heart chakra and the universal color for healing.

Balancing and cleansing it brings energy and happiness to our center of unconditional love and compassion, the heart. Green creates a condition of well-being and stability on all levels, helping overcome anxiety, intolerance and irritability.

Blue is the color of the throat chakra, and expresses truth, because the fifth chakra deals with outward expression of self, the way we tactfully and elegantly communicate with others. Blue works primarily with the throat energies in that it expresses creativity in a way that reflects the inner self.

Indigo is the color of the third-eye chakra, and expresses intuition, or the ability to see things as they really are, thus promoting tolerance, discernment and clarity in thought. Indigo purifies the bloodstream and mental processes, and promotes unity and stability of your higher subtle bodies.

Violet is the color of the crown chakra, and can create lightness of being in the body while helping to open the doors of perception to heightened consciousness. It expresses metamorphosis and devotion while enhancing inspirational energies. Violet encourages dedication to higher truths and ideals by blending the love in the color red with the truth and devotion in the color blue.
