Breast Cancer Health and Giving Back

When Angelina Jolie underwent a preventive double mastectomy after learning she carries a mutation of the BRCA1 gene, which puts her at higher risk for breast cancer and ovarian cancer. She wrote in the NY Times article that went viral, “The truth is I carry a ‘faulty’ gene, BRCA1, which sharply increases my risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer. My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in the case of each woman.”

Jolie jump-started a national health conversation that sometimes gets stalled around many other health conversations equally as significant and heart-breaking (Alzheimer’s disease, for instance, or childhood cancers). See what I mean? But it’s made me more sensitive to the issues of the day.

So I sat up and took notice when one of my very favorite sustainable fashion brands began giving back even more to a number of green charities that support multiple causes that include the Wilderness Land Trust, the Breast Cancer Fund, the Plus3Network, Soles4Souls.

Ahnu has contributed more than $250,000 to charitable organizations since their founding in 2007. My new earth-friendly vegan Ahnu Tilden IV  is engineered to promote an efficient, stable and balanced stride.

The name “Ahnu” derives from the Celtic goddess of balance in mythology. They enforce strict factory standards and use certified post-consumer recycled fibers in catalogs and packaging. After getting my shoes, I logged my physical activities on the Plus3 Network, and Ahnu, in turn, made a donation to the Breast Cancer Fund. The more I log, the more Ahnu gives to breast cancer funding. Brilliant!

Ahnu believes that no business should ever be complicit in human rights abuses. They make awesome sexy, rugged shoes and they also promote greater environmental responsibility with environmentally friendly technologies.

What do you do to give back somehow?
