Homemade Hair Masks

by Sasha Chinchar

Is your hair losing moisture after the long winter? Cold air, freezing wind and winter hats can leave your hair with dryness, frizz and breakage. Try reversing damaged hair with these natural homemade hair masks.

Avocado & Olive Oil

We all know how quickly an avocado can go from ripe and ready to really wrong. No need to throw out a perfectly good (or bad) avocado – use it for your hair! This nutrient-packed fruit is loaded with vitamin E and other antioxidants to help revive your hair. Mash in a bowl and mix in two teaspoons of extra virgin olive oil (to help with dry scalp). Apply to wet or dry hair, cover with a shower cap, and leave on for 15 minutes. Then rinse with warm water, for shiny, silky hair.

Egg Yolk

The yolk of an egg is a great natural way to nourish your hair. It’s full of healthy fats and protein, which work to renew your hair after a long winter. It also contains a high sulfur content, which can nourish the scalp and help with dandruff. Mix an egg, apply to wet or dry hair, cover with a shower cap and leave on for 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water. You can also mix an egg yolk in to the avocado recipe above.

Mayonnaise

Beauty and mayonnaise may not sound like a good fit, but people have been using this common ingredient to treat dry hair for generations. Not only does it contain eggs for protein—unless it’s vegan—it contains vinegar, which is great for restoring a healthy pH balance, and oils  for added shine. Apply to your hair, cover with a shower cap and let it sit for 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water.

Honey & banana

Honey is rich in antioxidants and is ideal for moisturizing your hair, while banana can help strengthen it with its fiber, proteins and vitamins. Mix these two ingredients together in a blender until smooth before applying it to your hair to prevent chunks that may be hard to wash out.

Coconut oil

With hundreds of possible uses, we’re beginning to wonder if there’s anything coconut oil can’t fix. Applying it to your hair at least once a week can help with hair growth and dandruff control. It’s also a sure way to nourish your hair with added minerals, vitamins and much-needed fatty acids.
