Stand up for World Peace

It’s nice to know that the UN General Assembly has declared September 21 the International Day of Peace. Every year, people stand up for world peace by observing the International Day of Peace around the world with marches, events and celebrations. 

On this day, the UN invites all nations and people to “honor a cessation of hostilities,” “to strengthen the ideals of peace,” and to commemorate the occasion with education and public awareness on issues related to world peace. 

Obviously, this year, we’ve got a lot of work to do, with conflicts raging all over the Middle East; Ukraine; Africa; Ferguson, Missouri. You may want to see what’s lined up in your community to draw attention to what the world needs now. And the UN has Climate Change on the agenda, too (see below):

In Miami: Let’s Stand Up for World Peace

Miamians will gather to make a huge human peace sign on the beach, organized by peace advocate JennyLee Molina of JLPR .

Interfaith Summit on Climate Change To highlight the contributions that faith traditions bring to the international climate debate. The World Council of Churches and Religions for Peace will organize an Interfaith Summit on Climate Change in New York from September 21 to 22. interfaithactiononclimatechange.org

People’s Climate March in NYC Join 1,000 grassroots organizations and sponsors to march for “a world safe from the ravages of climate change; a world with good jobs, clean air and water, and healthy communities.” For details, visit peoplesclimate.org/march.
