Main Street Vegan

Main Street Vegan copyBy Victoria Moran with Adair Moran

The subtitle is “everything you need to know to eat healthfully and live compassionately in the real world,” and it is “realness” that is the heart and soul of this book. Author Victoria Moran demystifies veganism with a primer on the nuts and bolts of becoming vegan, how to do it on a budget and why it isn’t nearly as hard as it may seem. Chapters range from the practical “Veganize Your Kitchen” to the painful “Know the Beings Behind Bacon and Burgers,” and every one ends with a delicious recipe. (Kale chips, yum!) Whether you’re committed to a vegan lifestyle or simply enjoy flirting with one, Main Street Vegan ($16.95; Tarcher/Penguin) is a great read.

Candle 79 Cookbook

By Joy Pierson, Angel Ramos and Jorge Pineda

Candle 79 copyTrue story: Joy Pierson and Bart Potenza opened the Candle Cafe, featuring vegan food in a casual setting, after winning $53K in the New York lottery. Ten years later they created the elegant Zagat-rated Candle 79, widely considered one of the best vegan restaurants in the country. Food is local, seasonal, organic and sustainable. And now you can cook it at home.

The Candle 79 Cookbook ($30; Ten Speed Press) is a gorgeous book, filled with mouthwatering photographs and dishes like “Live Lasagna,” a raw food version, and “Saffron Ravioli with Wild Mushrooms and Cashew Cheese.” Some of the recipes, like “Apricot Chutney” are quick and easy to make, others are more elaborate. But each and every one is absolutely delicious.
