Urban Summer Detox at Ona Spa

by Nicole Dorsey Straff

water spa 1The basics of any fast include more green liquids and exercise, and much less processed or fast foods. Veto the caffeine and gin, and stick to raw or vegan eats for a few days.

In French Basque, the word “ona” means “all things good.” Amen to that when it comes to a blood-cleansing detox. I skip the animal products(including dairy) and taking vitamins and green juices by the bucketful.

In the middle of bustling Beverly Blvd. between the Grove in Los Angeles, Calif., and high-fashion central Melrose Ave., is this luxury day spa offering state-of-the-art technology and an innovative fusion of contemporary health concepts that blend modern technology with old world therapies.

An organic little gem in the middle of business central, sandwiched between major studios, you literally must step into a different world upon entering the Asian-inspired Medi-spa, in equal parts urban zen retreat and clinical lab.

I was so relaxed after my 60-minute Rainforest Massage ($195)  I may have napped in the relaxation room with a cup of the most scrumptious coconut, hot tea. Finally, after three decaffeinated cups,  I shed my robe and strolled to the private couples outdoor showers (on the rooftop of this old, historical building).

After 90 minutes at Ona Spa I was utterly flabbergasted to realize that I had not, in fact, been transported to some exotic French Polynesian island. From the detox spa rooftop, I opened my eyes and saw a swath of jaywalking Angelenos beneath on Beverly Blvd.

Oh, I slowly realized that I was still in LA. Next time I yearn for a stay-cation, I’m heading to Ona Spa for the stone massage or a scalp treatment.

Even the bumper-to-bumper traffic back over the canyon couldn’t burst my spa-inspired good mood. If you are in the ‘hood, please come in for the new Face Acupuncture in which your therapist uses healing herbs and oils in addition to the ancient Asian arts. (45 minutes $95).

To bolster my daily detox, I made sure to do 60 minutes on the treadmill to sweat it out, I drank 10 cups a day of water with lemon and lime for added acidity and I got plenty of rest too, aiming for at least 8 hours.

What do you do in the middle of a busy week in order to detox just in time for the weekend?
